All three Chinese universities lost their opening matches ©FISU

Chinese universities endured a tough opening day at the inaugural International University Sports Federation (FISU) University World Cup Football event in Jinjiang.

The host nation has three representatives in the men's tournament, but none were able to record a victory.

Taiyuan University of Technology suffered a 3-0 defeat to the University of Wollongong in Group A, with the Australian team producing an impressive performance.

Hohai University were beaten 1-0 by Uruguay's University of the Republic in Group D, while the Beijing Institute of Technology lost by the same margin to the Autonomous University of Mexico in Group B.

Bangkok Thonburi enjoyed a strong start to their Group B campaign, easing to a 5-0 victory against Ethiopia's Kotebe Metropolitan University.

Group C delivered two of the highest-scoring matches on the opening day.

Brazil’s Paulista University recorded a 4-1 over Myongji University from South Korea.

Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University cruised to a 5-0 win over the International University of Language and Media from Italy.

The event began with an Opening Ceremony at the Jinjiang Football Park Stadium.

Former Argentine football star Juan Sebastián Verón was also present at a pre-tournament press conference to reveal the trophy.

Verón, who won the English Premier League and the Italian Serie A during his career, arrived with local children.

"It's important that you have a dream and follow it," he said.

The launch of the FISU University World Cup Football follows on from the success of the 3x3 basketball tournament, which has run for the past three years.

Competition is taking place across 14 training and competition venues in Jinjiang,

The Jinjiang Football Park Stadium, which has a capacity of 8,000, is the main venue for the event.

The women's event will kick-off tomorrow.
