The pathway to a unique method of buying tickets for the Paris 2024 Olympics was revealed here today at a suitably unique venue in the heart of the French capital.

Having announced in March that the tickets - numbering just under 10 million - will be accessed solely via a single worldwide digital platform, Paris 2024 organisers have now explained in detail how the first phase of sales is to work, using a personalised choice of Make Your Games packs.

Almost half of the tickets are priced at €50 (£43/$52) or less for the general public, with one million tickets priced at €24 (£21/$25), the entry price for all 32 sports on the Olympic Games programme except for surfing, which will not be sold.

There will be up to five categories of seats (1st, A, B, C and D), with the highest priced tickets set at €980 (£846/$1024).

The Opening and Closing Ceremonies will have additional specific categories and access will only be available during a later, individual ticket sales phase.

Unlike the process at previous Games, where people have reserved tickets and then had to wait for a draw process in which they may or may not be successful, the Paris 2024 model will involve a random draw at the beginning of the process.

Those successful in the draw will be able to access the site for available tickets for 48 hours, with the guarantee that they will receive the tickets they pay for.

Speaking in the Gustave-Eiffel Room with its panoramic view over the city, Paris 2024 President Tony Estanguet commented:

"With nearly 10 million tickets available for the  Olympic Games Paris 2024, the largest number ever on sale at a sporting event, we are opening up the Games wider than ever before.

"For the first time, all tickets for the general public will be on sale from one single official platform.

"All fans will be able to buy their tickets in the same way: on the Paris 2024 ticketing website.

"There will no longer be any agents or middle men involved.

"Previously you never really knew once you had selected your tickets whether you would be successful in the draw.

"So we have decided to reverse the process, so you will be sure that you will be able to live the Games as you wish to do.

"And it all  starts now."

The first step will be to create an account at tickets.paris2024.org in order to register for the draw for the first phase of ticket sales, which will open on December 1 and finish on January 31, 2023.

In the meantime applicants are invited to go onto the site to consult the prices and options for the "Make Your Games" packs.

Each pack will involve choosing three sessions from a range of sports.

For example, for €72 (£62/$75) it will be possible to buy a pack including athletics, handball and rugby; or gymnastics, judo and water polo; or two sailing sessions and a football match in Marseille; or golf, equestrian and mountain biking in the Yvelines.

For each session chosen, would-be spectators will be able to apply for up to six tickets.

Each ticketing account will be able to access a maximum of 10 packs.

Those who are successful in the draw will receive an email between February 13 and March 15 giving them two days' notice before the start of their 48-hour window of opportunity, with sales starting on February 15.

"You have 48 hours to connect to the sales site, create your own packs and pay for your order," a Paris 2024 release says.

"You can log in as many times as you like during your purchase timeslot and order up to 30 tickets."

The final day for "Make Your Games" packs sales will be March 15, with registration opening on the same day for the draw for individual ticket sales - a process that will conclude on April 21.

Individual ticket sales for those selected in the second draw will start in May 2023.

Etienne Thobois, the Paris chief executive, emphasised that those who were members of the Paris 2024 club would have priority in terms of applying for tickets.

The Paris 2024 release says: "By joining the Paris 2024 Club, you can: get priority access to the 'Make Your Games' pack sales; purchased timeslots in the first four days (from 15 to 18 February 2023 inclusive) will be reserved for Club members selected in the draw.

Thobois added: "You will have priority over the platform if you are a Paris 2024 member, and you will reach it earlier on so you have more possibilities to get the tickets you want.

"If you buy tickets and you cannot attend for whatever reason you will be able to sell your ticket on an official site that will be set up in 2024 at its real value, its purchase value.

"That will be the only way you can sell it."
