Seb_Coe_Glasgow_Visit_16March 9 – A campaign to get people to ditch their normal footwear and slip on trainers for the day in support of the 2014 Commonwealth Games has been backed by Olympic legend Sebastian Coe (pictured left).

The chairman of the London 2012 voiced his approval of the initiative as he went on a tour of the Velodrome and NISA (National Indoor Sports Arena) construction site in the East End of Glasgow.

Sport Your Trainers day, which will be held annually on Commonwealth Day for the next three years, aims to encourage everyone from business leaders, schoolchildren and doctors to politicians, office workers and housewives to wear their trainers for the day.

Participants can download promotional posters for their workplaces from www.glasgow2014.com.

Glasgow 2014 is working with local authorities, BusinessClub Scotland and schools, colleges and universities to gain support across the country.

"I'm proud to be supporting a Glasgow 2014 campaign that gets people fitter and more connected to the Games," said Coe.

"Hopefully, wearing trainers for just one day will spur people on to do more, even if it's just running for the bus...or cycling to work instead of getting the bus.

"Glasgow 2014 is only around the corner, with just over three years to go until the Opening Ceremony.

"It's going to be an outstanding event that will bring the eyes of the world to Glasgow, and I can't wait."

Glasgow 2014 chief executive John Scott said: "The campaign is gaining real momentum as we go into the final week, with hundreds of thousands of Scots already backing the campaign.

"Getting support from London 2012 is fantastic and a real boost to the campaign, and underlines the support that the two Organising Committees can give each other."
