The day is celebrated annually on the fourth Saturday of every September in memory of the late Shriver, the sister of former United States President John F Kennedy and founder of the Special Olympics 50 years ago.

As well as a celebration of her life, the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day is an opportunity to promote the values of the movement she founded, while encouraging people with intellectual disabilities to take up sport.

The day is also a celebration of Shriver's vision of an inclusive, respectful world.

Hundreds of Play Unified to Live Unified events took place across the globe to mark EKS Day

Special Olympics is a worldwide movement in more than 170 countries which provides sporting opportunities for those with intellectual disabilities.

Hundreds of events took place across the world, from Russia to Serbia and China to Hungary, in the latest celebration of Shriver and the Special Olympics.

Among them were football matches in Bangalore and Cambodia, a softball tournament in Oklahoma and boccia in Kraków.
