Panathenaic Stadium, which was rebuilt in marble in 329 BC and renovated and extended in 140 AD, was opened to the public by the Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC) on April 15 2010.

The stadium in the Greek capital Athens - which also hosted archery and the finish of the marathon at the 2004 Olympics - has now officially welcomed 401,143 visitors.

Of these, 105,909 were schoolchildren.

The stadium is open throughout the year from 8am to 7pm, with a ticket costing €3 (£2.44/$4.08).

School students and teachers can enter for free, and audio guides in 10 languages are available.

There is a gift shop in the courtyard of the stadium.

According to the HOC, visits to the historic site have increased by 50 per cent in the first five months of this year.

The HOC manages and maintains the facilities in and around the stadium.
