altJUNE 29 - SPAIN'S Euro 2008 victory tonight showed a “will to win” which will inspire the Spanish Capital’s bid to host the Olympics said the Madrid 2016 bid chief.

Mercedes Coghen, the chief executive of the Madrid bid said: “Spain has overcome the frustrations of the past to win a great victory.

"This will inspire Madrid to do the same and do our best to win the right to hold the world’s greatest sports event."

Spain beat Germany in tonight's final in Vienna 1-0, courtesy of a goal from Liverpool striker Fernando Torres.

It was their first major trophy for 44-years.

Coghen said: “We are a passionate sporting nation and want our city to live the ideals of the Olympic movement, to see our dream come true.

“If we show the determination and self-belief of our national footballers then we can win too."

Coghen won an Olympic  gold medal in hockey for Spain and believes that the drive and focus needed to win a at sport are the same qualities needed to win an Olympic bid.

She said: “The race is down to four great cities and we going to need every ounce of energy we can give to Madrid to victory.

“Spanish fans will be celebrating well into the night in the streets of Madrid and I am sure this spirit will inspire everyone to believe the city can do it.”

The decision is made by the IOC in October 2009.

The other candidate cities are Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo and Chicago.
