August 24 - Qatargas has made a financial contribution to the Qatar Paralympic Committee (QPC) to help their preparations for London 2012.

The cheque was handed over by Abdul Moneim Al Sayed, the head of operations at the public relations department of Qatargas, to Ali Kulai, a Board member of the QPC, during a special ceremony.

Qatargas' contribution to the committee will go towards preparing a multi-purpose sports hall for the athletes who will compete in various games at regional and international levels, including the London 2012 Paralympics.

Ghanim Al-Kuwari, the chief operating officer at Qatargas, said: "We feel proud to offer this support to the committee which has been focused on improving special needs sports in the country.

"Like able-bodied athletes those that compete at the Paralympics are elite athletes who deserve the support and commitment of the community to help them achieve their sporting goals.

"'Our position as a leader in Qatar's energy industry is an opportunity for us to support important social development initiatives that will continue to improve the lives of the people of this country.

"Corporate citizenship forms an integral part of the company's vision.

"Qatargas is committed to providing valuable assistance to health, safety, education and sport programmes throughout Qatar."

Qatar made its debut in the Paralympics at Atlanta in 1996 but is still waiting for its first medal.

Kulai said: "We value the support of Qatargas to the committee in ensuring high standards for Paralympic Games in the country.

"We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Qatargas management for this gesture which will go a long way in providing sporting facilities for those with special needs."
