August 11 - Gerry Marsden, a musican synonymous with Liverpool's glorious musical past, is to feature a video to be released to help the city's bid to be part of England's plans to host the 2018 World Cup.

Marsden the lead member of Gerry & The Pacemakers, and Peter Hooton, the former lead vocalist on The Farm, will be heading the "One City: One Goal" campaign in a promotional video of the pair using guitars for goalposts as part of an impromptu kickabout, which will be shown at the visit of the Football Association's bid inspection team on September 2.

The first sequence of the video was premièred on the giant screen opposite Lime Street Station earlier today and showed the birds atop the Liver Building showing off some silky skills before firing the ball into the net - a reference to the fact that the goal net was invented in the city as one of the spearheads for the bid.

Marsden and Hooten were also named ambassadors and will promote the city alongside fellow supporters John Barnes, Gary Stevens and Phil Neal.

altMarsden (pictured), whose recording of "You'll Never Walk Alone" has been Liverpool FC's anthem since the 1960s, said: "Football, like singing, is in my blood so to play a part in this bid - and scoring a goal! - is a great joy and honour.

"I'd love to see the city part of England's bid.

"Liverpool is one of the world's great footballing cities and we also have the most passionate and tuneful fans.

"That passion can be felt in the stands and in the street and I know if Liverpool was part of 2018 it would give England and the world a World Cup to remember."

Hooton, a long-time season ticket holder at Liverpool, said: "I'm sure this video will raise a smile - it's all about Liverpool and football but done with a good dose of scouse humour.

"I'm sure it'll be a big hit on the web when it's launched."

The Farm’s hit single Altogether Now has in the past been used by both Everton and England.

Warren Bradley, the Leader of Liverpool City Council, is delighted with the slogan for 2018 and is encouraging city residents to get behind the bid.

He said: "Our bid slogan perfect sums up what the 2018 bid means to Liverpool - to unite everyone in Liverpool and the wider city region with the sole goal of making sure we make England's team of host cities.

"If we become a host city our next goal will be to help England win.

"Then the next goal will be to use 2018 to inspire a new generation of fans and give the world a welcome the city is so famous for."

A final bid will be submitted in November with the successful host cities announced in December.

There are 15 cities and towns across England hoping to be chosen.

FIFA are due to announce the host countries for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups in December 2010.
