August 11 - Foreign teams will be allowed to acclimatise at Weymouth and Portland for the 2012 Olympics alongside Britain's successful squad, it has been announced.

It follows discussions between the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) and the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA).

Packages will be available for an annual or three-year usage but will not clash with the British team's schedule.

The packages will include dinghy boat parking and launching, container storage, rib launching, mooring, storage and cranage for keel boats as well as full access to car parking, changing rooms and canteen.

During some of the high profile events there may be some restrictions on international team access, but these will be kept to a minimum.

The £15 million WPNSA is located in Osprey Quay on the northern tip of the island, and the waters of Portland Harbour and Weymouth Bay and is credited with having some of the best sailing waters in the world.

John Tweed, the chief executive of the WPNSA, said: "The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy is now welcoming international teams to train at the venue through a managed access system.

"There is a clearer picture now on the major events that will be staged at the WPNSA in the lead up to the Games and therefore we can now actively invite overseas teams to train from the completed venue.

"Visiting sailing teams will be able to access details of WPNSA training packages directly through their member national authority.

"The international team training access is positive for the WPNSA and will complement the venue’s existing commitment as a water sports facility with local and global appeal."

Britain has high hopes of extending its dominantion in the sailing at the 2012 Olympics, especially with the advantage of competing in home waters.

It is already the most successful sailing country in the history of the Games having won a total of 49 medals, including 24 gold, and has topped the overall medals table at the last three Games.
