October 7 - National Lottery funds will be used to create a UK-wide School Olympics proposed by Dame Kelly Holmes (pictured) under a Conservative Government, it was announced today.

Shadow Culture, Media and Sport Secretary Jeremy Hunt backed the proposals made by the Olympic double gold medallist for a national contest with the finals held in the London 2012 Stadium.

Hunt promised a "revolution in school sport" if Tory leader David Cameron wins the next General Election, which is expected to take place next May.

He told the Conservative Party Conference he would end Labour's "political correctness and health and safety madness".

Hunt said: "What sort of society is it that bans scouts from carrying penknives?

"What sort of society is it that bans parents from taking pictures of their children on sports day?

"And, even worse, what sort of a society is it that brands 11 million parents as potential paedophiles by saying they have to go through a CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check before they can even give a lift to their children's friends?

"You won't stop child abuse by doing that but you will stop thousands and thousands of after-school sports clubs and a Conservative Government will not allow that to happen."

Hunt welcomed Dame Kelly's ideas about the Schools Olympics.

He said: "We think it's a great idea and under a Conservative Government it will happen."

Dame Kelly will act as the chairwoman of an "Olympic legacy task-force" to be set-up by the Tories which will work to use the 2012 Games to boost sport.

She will head a team including triple Olympic sailing champion Ben Ainslie, chairman of UK Athletics Ed Warner and Simon Greenberg, the outgoing communications director at Chelsea.

Dame Kelly told delegates at the Party Conference she had been up and down the country talking to people about the Olympic Games, and found that people wanted to feel more included in the Games in return for the investment being poured into them.

Dame Kelly said a Schools Olympics would not only encourage grassroots participation in sports but also bring communities together.

She said: "My challenge is for somebody to put in a Schools Olympics.

"That should be what is left post-Olympics.

"I want to see something incredible, something we should all get behind, something that will still be there 10 years later ... so that people will feel it was worth doing."
