January 14 - The Nigerian Paralympic Committee (NPC) is to assume a greater role in overseeing its affiliated associations in the hope of being able to raise more sponsorship money to help them prepare for London 2012, they have announced.

The new constitution, which will also help bring the NPC more into line with the rules and regulations of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), were announced by Sunmola Olatubosun, the second vice-president of the NPC.

He said: "As a body, we are being guided by a constitution; these rules and regulation will guide us in our programmes, especially international competitions.

"Sponsorship has always been a problem for our organisation.

"This is why we have resolved to constitute the committee to be in charge of getting us sponsors to enable us organise our programmes."

Nigeria made its debut in the Paralympics at Barcelona in 1992 and at Beijing in 2008 sent a team of 28 competitors in four sports.

They returned home from the Chinese capital with nine medals, including four gold, two of them won by Eucharia Njideka Iyiazi, who claimed victory in the discus and shot put in the F57/58 category.
