January 24 - Ireland, whose team is expected to include double Beijing champion Jason Smyth (pictured), is planning to set up a pre-Games training camp before the London 2012 Paralympics in Portugal, they have announced.

A delegation from the Paralympic Council of Ireland (PCI) has made two visits to inspect facilities in northern Portugal.

It was led by Nancy Chillingworth, Ireland's Paralympic performance director, and also included Jimmy Gradwell, the President of the PCI.

The party was completed by Liam Harbison, the PCI's chief executive, and Austin Mallon, a representative of the Irish Sports Council.

Following the inspection trip, conducted with Move Sports, a comprehensive plan is now in place with the full details to be revealed by the PCI in April.

Ireland have set themselves the target in London of improving on their performance in Beijing in 2008 where they won five medals, including three gold, two of them by Smyth, who clinched victory in the 100 and 200 metres in the T13 category.

Michael McKillop was the team's other gold medallist, winning the 800m in the T37 section.

Chilingworth said: "The plan is really coming together now with a quality camp base identified in northern Portugal.

"While the final hotel base is yet to be finalised, the final two options are really solid.

"The athletes will be really happy with the quality of all the sports venues we have selected.

"The standard of these facilities is exceptionally high and will greatly assist them in their final preparations before London 2012."
