April 22 - International Paralympic Committee (IPC) President Sir Philip Craven said today that Juan Antonio Samaranch (pictured), the former President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) who died yesterday at a hospital in Barcelona, made a contribution to the Paralympic Movement that will never be forgotten.



Samaranch spent 21 years in charge of the IOC between 1980 and 2001 and was instrumental in creating a close bond with the between the IOC and the IPC when the latter organisation was first established in 1989.

Appointed Honorary Life President of the IOC when he stepped down as President in 2001, Samaranch maintained his support for the Paralympic Movement throughout his final years and Sir Philip claims that the Spaniards’ influence on making the Paralympic Movement as successful as it is today will never be forgotten.

Sir Philip said: "Juan Antonio Samaranch was indeed an inspired visionary.

"In the late 1980’s and 1990’s he ensured that relationships between the IOC and the IPC were maintained and strengthened.

"He is a key reason for the success of the Paralympic Movement today.

"On behalf of the entire Paralympic Family, I send my heartfelt condolences to Juan Antonio Samaranch’s family and the Olympic Family at this most difficult time."
