May 7 - Britain’s wheelchair tennis players face a difficult task at the Invacare World Team Cup today as the men’s side, led by the country's  number one David Phillipson (pictured), take on top seeds the Netherlands in the semi-final while the women’s team meet Thailand in a bid to secure third place.

The men’s team booked their place in the last four of the competition for the first time since 2002 with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Slovak Republic in Wednesday’s World Group 1 quarter-finals in Antalya, Turkey.

Eighteen year-old Scot Gordon Reid laid the foundations for the victory when he eased past David Chabrecek 6-1, 6-1 in the opening singles rubber.

Phillipson then downed Jozef Felix 6-3, 7-5 to put the tie beyond the Slovakian sixth seeds before Reid paired up with Marc McCarroll against Marek Gergely and Tomas Masaryk in a dead doubles rubber to secure a 6-1, 7-5 victory and complete the whitewash over Slovak Republic.

Following the tie, world number 20 Phillipson said: "I thought I played well today and was 5-2 up in the second set, but then my ribs started hurting a bit after I fell out of my chair when we played doubles on Monday.

"They’re only bruised, but it was nice to get the match over and done with.

"The Netherlands will be a much tougher ask, but we have nothing to lose in either of our next two matches, whatever placing we end up playing for now.”

Meanwhile, Britain’s women’s wheelchair tennis team will play Thailand today in a bid to secure third place in their event after losing out to Japan in a deciding doubles rubber in the semi-finals.

In the first match of the tie, 16-year-old Japanese star and Junior Masters champion Yui Kamiji saw off Britain’s Kay Forshaw 6-1, 6-2 before Britain’s world number one ranked junior Jordanne Whiley levelled the tie by beating Japanese number one Kanako Domori 6-1, 6-1.

Whiley then teamed up with Louise Hunt for the deciding doubles rubber but a third doubles victory of the week proved beyond the duo as Kamiji continued to live up to her reputation as a future star in the sport by inspiring Japan to a 6-1, 6-1 victory.

Britain’s juniors, Alfie Hewitt and Josh Steels, will play Australia today to decide third and fourth place after the pair beat Iraq 2-1 while the quad team, who have struggled this week without world number one Peter Norfolk, completed their campaign on a winning note as they secured a seventh place with a 2-1 victory over South Africa.
