May 28 - Britain men’s wheelchair basketball team put on a master class in front of a deafening home crowd as they thrashed the Beijing 2008 silver medallists 66-44 in the second round of matches at the BT Paralympic World Cup here today.

Jon Pollock (pictured) was the star of the show for the home side and delighted the fans at the Manchester Regional Arena by top scoring with 20 points.

Simon Munn also chipped in with a valuable contribution of 16 points as Britain moved a step closer to securing a place in Sunday’s final.

Britain took an early lead in the first quarter and by half-time had established an enormous lead of 20 points as they entered half time at 37-27.

Canada put up a better performance in the second half but Britain finished the match with their 20 point lead still perfectly intact.

Munn told insideworldparasport: "We put on a fantastic performance today and all of us played really well.

"We still have a lot of work ahead of us but we love competing at the BT Paralympic World Cup and we are really looking to win the event to provide some great momentum heading into the World Championships in Birmingham."

In the women’s event, Britain did not fare as well as the men as they went down 51-24 to the Netherlands.

Inge Hvitzing from the Netherlands was the games’ leading scorer with 14 points while Laurie Williams (pictured)  top scored for Britain with just four points.

Williams said: "After yesterday's loss I think we may have beat ourselves up too much and put too much pressure on this game."

The defeat was their second in two days after they went down to Canada yesterday which means the team now need a minor miracle to make the women’s final.
