June 2 - A cheque for a million Drams (£18,000) has been presented to the Armenia Paralympic Committee (APC) by the British Embassy in Yerevan after more than 60 people, including the Ambassador Charles Lonsdale, took part in the first-ever Sport Relief Mile to be held in the country.

The group ran and walked from Matenadran, which holds some of the world's richest depositories of medieval manuscripts and books, to Republic Square to raise money to help the APC prepare for the London 2012 Paralympics.

Lonsdale handed the cheque over to Hakob Abrahamyan, the President of the APC, at a special ceremony.

The APC plans to use the money to help organise a conference on the Paralympics as well as prepare its team for London 2012.

Abrahamyan said: "This is one of the rare times when the attention is focused on the issues of people with disabilities."
