June 11 - Britain's boccia team, including Paralympic champion Nigel Murray (pictured),  won three silver medals at the CPISRA Boccia World Championships in Lisbon.

The Leamington Spa player was second in the BC2 event joining brothers Peter McGuire and Stephen McGuire, both from Hamilton, in the BC4 pairs event on the podium.

The McGuire brothers finished third in their pool to go through to the quarter-finals where they played world number ones Portugal, who had finished top of the pool.

The British duo, having already overcome Portugal at the pool stage, played impressively to record another victory 5-1, and then went on to beat Slovakia 3-2 in the semi-final.

In the final Britain played Paralympic gold medallists Brazil but in a tightly-fought match the South Americans won 4-2.

Stephen McGuire also secured an individual silver medal in the BC4 individual event.

After winning his pool, McGuire drew his brother Peter in the next round.

It was a close match between the two siblings and the game went to a tie-break but Stephen came out on top.

McGuire’s quarter-final match, against Hungary’s Dezso Beres, also went to a tie-break but the Scotsman again prevailed.

McGuire (pictured) faced home favourite Fernando Pereira  in his semi-final match but this time the British player won convincingly 7-2 and went on to face Brazil’s Paralympic champion Dirceu Jose Pinto in the final.

Once again the match was extremely close and went to a tie-break, but this time the Brazilian narrowly won and McGuire took his second silver of the competition.

Murray also secured individual silver after finishing at the top of his pool in the round-robin stage.

He went on to beat Russia’s Svetlana Gorgieva 7-2 and win a close match against China’s Zhao Enyang on a tie-break in the next two rounds.

In the quarter-finals Murray avenged defeat in last year’s European Championships by beating Spain’s Manuel Ángel Martín 5-4.

In the semi-final Murray beat Slovakia’s Tomas Kral, who had beaten Murray’s British teammate Dan Bentley in an earlier round, 4-1 but it was China’s Yan Zhiqiang who secured the gold with a 5-2 win in the final.

Murray also competed as part of Britain’s Paralympic gold medal winning BC1/2 team, alongside David Smith, Andrew Morgan, Zoe Robinson and Bentley.

Britain, who are the top-ranked team in the world, sailed through the round-robin stages and beat the Netherlands convincingly 8-2 in the BC1/2 team event, but lost out to a surprisingly strong Thailand 8-4 in the quarter-final.

GB Boccia Performance Manager Matt Hammond was nevertheless pleased with the team’s performance but warned that other nations were providing tough competition for Britain:

He said: "As a team Great Britain were outstanding in these championships, leading the way for Europe with a medal haul of three silvers.

"The standard of the game globally has risen significantly with Korea setting the early pace for London 2012.

"These results however, show that the British team is competitive at world level across the classes and will act as a springboard for the GB squad over the next two years as we focus on preparing the players for  London."
