June 14 - Heavy rain proved the biggest hurdle on the second day of the Deloitte Ride Across Britain as the 600 participants battled through the elements as they cycled the 98 miles between Kyle of Sutherland and Loch Linnhe.

The riders, led by double Olympic gold medalist James Cracknell, had to tackle a daunting 10 mile climb to reach a height of 1,223ft before enjoying the winding roads along the Loch Ness where they were kindly supported at their pit stop at Lovat Arms in Fort Augustus.

The cyclists finally reached the Deloitte Ride Across Britain base camp at the foot of Ben Nevis and after a good rest, will take on their third stage out of the nine.

Stage three sees the group cycle 129 miles from Loch Linnhe to East Renfrewshire.

The ride includes three peaks at over 1,000 feet before the inevitable long descents to the famous landmark ‘Green Welly Stop.’

The day will finish with a tough climb into East Renfrewshire.

Following the completion of stage two, Cracknell said: "It was an eventful day with some jaw dropping scenery along the Loch Ness, an unexpected lamb saving mission with Paralympian Sarah Storey and Boardman Bike’s Alan Ingerfield and lots of rain.

"Good to see the British summer weather is as reliable as the football team!

"Above all, I’ve been so impressed by everyone’s efforts so far.

"Riding through the constant rain is incredibly tough but everyone is digging in, helping each other out and many are making sure that they have time to stop for photographs of the stunning scenery on the route."
