July 5 - Ireland today announced the appointments of the sports science and medical personnel for the London 2012 Irish Paralympic team with Dr Joe Conway (pictured) appointed chief medical officer.



Conway will now lead a multidisciplinary team of sports science and medical service practitioners that will provide essential support to Irish Paralympians in the build up to and at the 2012 Games.

Conway, who was fuflilled the same role for the Beijing Paralympics in 2008, heads up the group of experienced staff, many of whom have been working with Irish Paralympic athletes for a number of years.

Conway said: "The sports science and medical team are all delighted to be working with such a hard working and focused group of athletes and management and are excited by the challenge of maximising the preparation of the team for success in London 2012."

The team will be responsible for delivering ongoing medical support and sports science analysis which will be used to track and support the training and progress of the Irish athletes in preparation for London 2012.

The group will also work closely with Waterford Institute of Technology to develop and implement the Irish team’s preparation strategy. 

Liam Harbison, the Chef de Mission for Ireland's team for the London Paralympics, said: "I’d like to congratulate the sports science and medical professionals on their appointment to the 2012 Irish Paralympic team. 

"The team we have appointed have built up a wealth of experience specific to Paralympic Sport and will further develop strategies to ensure the athletes hit career best performances at the London Games."

Conway is joined by team physiotherapist Fintan O’Donnell, team sport psychologist Dr Alan Ringland, team performance analyst Alan Swanton and team physiologists Bruce Wardrop and Antonia Rossiter.
