July 9 - England's Shelly Woods is set to miss the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in October because she wants to concentrate on next year's International Paralympic Committee (IPC) World Athletics Championships in Christchurch.

The 24-year-old from Blackpool, who won a silver medal in the 1500 metres and bronze in the 5000m at the Beijing Paralympics, does not believe she can do well in both events, especially with the World Championships due to begin in New Zealand on January 21.

She said: "I am leaning towards missing the Commonwealth Games and it is a question of prioritising.

"I have done all the qualifying times for the World Championships and I would rather be training for them because they are more important.

"I would love to go to the Commonwealth Games but they come at the wrong time for my schedule.

I have qualifed for the 1500m, the 5000m and the marathon in the World Championships.

"I have also qualifed for the 800 metres but I doubt I will compete in that."

Woods still faces a busy schedule before the end of the year, including such high-profile events as the New York Marathon and the Great North Run.

She said: "I have always said I want to win the New York Marathon and I have not managed it yet.

"Last year I missed the Great North Run, one of my favourites, because I was in the Berlin Marathon and I wasn't pleased when someone took my course record."
