July 12 - Britain enjoyed a hugely successful day at the World Wheelchair Basketball Championships in Birmingham after the men’s side topped their pool with a stunning 78-66 win over the United States while the women’s team defeated Mexico 57-50 to advance to the quarter-finals at the National Indoor Arena (NIA).

The men’s clash between wheelchair basketball heavyweights Britain and the US was perhaps the best match of the competition so far and in a game that pitted two sides together that had won all four of their games at the NIA so far, the lead changed hands a staggering 24 times.

It was only a strong final quarter from the hosts that eventually secured victory and a magnificent 21 point haul from top scorer Simon Munn helped ensure that the BT Paralympic World Cup gold medallists face a favourable quarter-final draw.

Britain’s head coach, Murray Treseder said: "I’m happy with the way we played; it’s the best we have played so far this tournament and hopefully we can take this performance and build on it going into the quarter finals."

Britain’s women secured their first win in Birmingham against Mexico in what was a must win game for Gary Peel’s side.

Helen Freeman led the scoring for the hosts with 18 points while there was good support from both Helen Turner and Louise Sugden.

The win saw Britain claim the fourth and final quarter-final spot in their pool but they now face an extremely difficult task as they take on the US, the reigning Paralympic gold medallists and favourites for the women’s title, who are unbeaten in the competition so far.
