July 23 - The Kenya National Paralympic Committee has received two containers from Belgium with wheelchairs and other walking items.

The project, an initiative of Evelyne Guchura, started in 2008 after Niels Van Baelen, a nine-year-old boy from Belgium, donated his outgrown wheelchair.

In 2009 during Guchura’s second internships at Nike and To Walk Again Foundation in Belgium, she brought a photo of Brian Mugo, using Niel’s wheelchair.

The impact of the photo inspired the project: Wheels for Kenya.

The project has realised a total of 503 pieces which include wheelchairs, walkers, crutches and other walking aids whose value is about Sh493,900 (£3,941/$6,079).

The wheelchairs will be donated to 16 schools and institutions which cater for children with physical challenges in seven provinces in Kenya, as well as other needy cases identified by the Kenya Wheelchair and Amputee Federation, in their regional branches.

It is estimated that 350,000 people in Kenya need a wheelchair.

Guchura claimed "Wheels for Kenya" is going to be the brainchild of a long working relationship between Kenya Paralympics Committee, Nike European Logistics and To Walk Again Foundation.
