August 22 - The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) have appointed former Rugby Football League (RFL) communications manager Craig Spence (pictured) as their new media and communications manager following the departure of Steffi Klein.

Klein left the organisation after seven years in June to become new sports director for the Munich bid team to host the 2018 Olympics and Paralympics and Spence, who is from Leeds, has seen off stiff international competition to take up the role.

Spence, who was the RFL communications manager until May, is an award winning consumer PR and sports specialist and is now set to play an integral role in enhancing the Paralympic Movement around the world.

Spence will be responsible for the creation and implementation of a comprehensive communications strategy as well as act as the
official spokesperson for the organisation at all major IPC events including the Paralympic Games at London 2012.

He is set to take up the full-time position from September 1 this year which will be predominantly based at the IPC’s headquarters in Bonn.

IPC President Sir Philip Craven told insideworldparasport: "When Steffi left the IPC to join the Munich bid team for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Games, she left a big void at the organisation.

"We are delighted that someone of Craig’s calibre is now joining us to fill that void and we look forward to him joining up with the IPC."

Educated at the University of Central Lancashire, Spence also has experience working as account manager at public relations agency Ptarmigan and PR executive at major UK-based water company Yorkshire Water.
