September 19 - Britain's held off Canada’s Josh Cassidy to win the Great North Run today, while Shelly Woods was the runaway winner of the women’s equivalent.

The outcome of the men’s half-marathon meant Weir, who won two gold medals at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing, turned the tables on Cassidy, who defeated the Briton at this year’s Virgin London Marathon.

Weir clocked 44min 49sec to defeat Cassidy by one-second.

The Londoner said: "I was pleased with that and I'm now looking forward to the New York marathon on November 7 and then the big one for me is the World Championships which are in New Zealand in January.

"All my training is geared towards that."

In the women’s race, Woods took her third title, fending off the challenge of Italy’s Francesca Porcellato.

The UK record-holder stopped the clock at 52:59, while Porcellato took the runner-up spot in 57:09.
Woods, who has a busy few weeks ahead with appearances in the Berlin and New York marathons, said: "I felt really good.

"It’s not easy on your own, but I was chasing the lads and got close to some of the up-hills so it was different.

"My main focus is training for the World championships in New Zealand in January, I really want to get the gold so I’ll be training away a lot but I like keeping busy."
