Paralympic Council of Ireland logo(1)November 15 - Ireland remain on course for a strong performance at the London 2012 Paralympic Games following the successful completion of the second Renault Ireland Team 2012 Training camp in Limerick, they claim.

The camp saw Irish Paralympic athletes and staff continue their journey towards the Games safe in the knowledge that preparations are well underway and on schedule for the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

Following an inspirational talk from Irish World Championship 20 kilometres walking silver medallist, Olive Loughnane in which she emphasised the necessity for each athlete and coach to leave no stone unturned as they prepare, training continued over the weekend with athletes receiving ongoing sports science, medical and coaching support as part of an agreed and planned training schedule.

The training camps, held twice a year in the top class training facilities at the University of Limerick, are an integral part of the preparation for each athlete and provide an opportunity for athletes and coaches alike to receive updates on planning for the London Paralympics along with the opportunity to get become familiar with fellow athletes and sports with which they may share the London experience in just under two years time.

Speaking at the camp wrap up, chief executive of the Paralympic Council of Ireland (PCI), Liam Harbison said: "With next year being an important year for qualification for London  2012, I wish you the best in your performances next year.

"I look forward to seeing you at our nest camp and know that Paralympic Council of Ireland will support you in every way we can."

The next major competition for Irish Paralympic Athletes following the Renault Ireland Team 2012 training camp will be the 2011 IPC World Athletics Championships in Christchurch from the January 21-30 where Ireland's double Paralympic champion Jason Smyth, the fastest Paralympian on the planet, will be strong favourite to retain the sprint tittles he won in Assen, the Netherlands in 2006.
