Talan_Skeels-PigginsDecember 13 - Talan Skeels-Piggins (pictured) showed fantastic early season form as he stormed to gold in the SuperG male sit skier class in the European Cup race in Pitztal, Austria.

The 40-year-old from Bath, paralysed from the chest down following a motorcycle accident, dominated the field as he finished in 1min 12.16sec to claim victory a full second ahead of Frederic Francois of France.

There was also a strong performance for Skeels-Piggins' team-mate and fellow Vancouver 2010 Paralympian Sean Rose who narrowly missed out on bronze as he finished fourth in 1:13.78.

British Disability Ski Team (BDST) coach Jane Stevens said: "It is a fantastic start to the season with Talan winning the SuperG by a full second and Sean coming fourth and just pipped out of third.

"Talan has been training consistently, has had some fantastic breakthroughs and fully deserves his win.

"It is a very emotional and proud day for the whole team."

Skeels-Piggins was also given a trophy - awarded to the winner of the Super G in the sitting category - in memory of German sit skier Tom Mayer who died in July 2004.

Earlier in the week there were also successes over at the IPCAS level races in Italy where Martin Hewitt and Peter Dunning are fighting hard to make the qualification grade for the World Championships in January.

In the giant slalom and slalom events, sit skier Dunning took both gold medals in his category while Hewitt took two silvers in the men's standing category.

Unfortunately, there was not a large quantity of competitors at the Italian event so the race points awarded were not enough to assure them of that vital World Championships ticket just yet.

However BDST team manager David Chugg admitted Britain have got off to a great start, saying: "All in all, five medals from the first couple of race meets in the 2010-2011 season is an amazing start and bodes well for the ambitious GB team."
