Cardiff_powerliftersJanuary 26 - Powerlifter Jason Irving will compete for the first time since surgery last June when he takes part in the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Cardiff Invitational on Saturday (January 29).

Athletes from countries such as Finland, Holland and Ghana will be hoping to make their mark against the best of British powerlifters at the Sport Wales National Centre.

Lifting in the 67.5kg category, the 36-year-old Leeds-based Irving will be aiming to lift more than 170kg and get close to his personal best of 180kg.

Anthony Peddle from Derby will be aiming to lift at least 147.5kg, a weight which should be enough to give him an IPC top ten ranking in the 52kg class.

Currently ranked fourth in the IPC ranking, Newark-based Natalie Blake will lift in the 52kg category and will be aiming for a clean lift of 95kg to maintain her fourth-placed ranking.

Essex-based Adam Alderman lifts in the 48kg category, and will be targeting a new personal best in excess of his IPC ranking of 132.5kg.

IPC World Junior Champion Zoe Newson, the 18-year-old from Essex, will be aiming to break into the top three IPC rankings and will need to lift more than 87.5kg - 2.5kg more than her current personal best.

Newcomers Andrew Whittaker and Jason Owen will be aiming for new personal best lifts, while London's Ali Jawad has withdrawn from the event with flu.

Many of the British lifters will be fresh from attending the Powerlifting Podium Camp at the High Performance Centre in Leeds last week.
