Haiti_wheelchair_athletesApril 12 - A volunteer from Kingston in Surrey, who set up Haiti's first spinal rehabilitation unit, is now working to send the country's first full team to the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

Carwyn Hill was working for his Haiti Hospital Appeal charity when last year's devastating earthquake struck.

The disaster, which occurred on January 12, 2010, killed an estimated 220,000 people and left over 180,000 homes and 5,000 schools either damaged or completely destroyed, and it was Hill who helped organise emergency relief in second city Cap Haitien to aid the earthquake victims.

But hoping to help further, Hill has spent the last few weeks meeting representatives of national football, cycling, tennis and volleyball organisations to discuss the country forming a Paralympic team for London 2012.

"It would bring a whole new dignity to the state of disability in Haiti if they had a team who could stand on the stage in front of the world," Hill said.

"If they could come out on the streets and be able to display their disabilities; that would be a huge step forward."

Gareth Sheppard, the Paralympic performance manager for the British cycling team, has backed the idea of the team competing in Para-cycling but said it would be a "tall ask" to develop athletes with the London 2012 Paralympics only 500 days away.

Haiti's potential Paralympians would have to finish in the top 10 in the qualifying competitions which this year will be held in Australia, Canada, Spain and Denmark.

Sheppard has advised them to aim for the H1 and H2 categories in hand cycling, which are for athletes with more severe disabilities and have lower participation rates.

"I think it's definitely important," said Sheppard.

"The situation in Haiti is very, very different to that in Europe and the UK – there's not the same stigma on disabled sports here.

"Our athletes are integrated and train with able bodied athletes every day.

"That's a long way from where they are in Haiti.

"It's something we are very, very keen to support."

The country sent a single athlete, its first, to the Beijing 2008 Games while London 2012 said it expected a Haitian team to complete next year.
