Pistorius_SingletonApril 13 - The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has published the final athletics event programme for London 2012 featuring 170 different medal events, the highlight of which looks certain to be the men's 100m T44 showdown between South African Paralympic gold medallist Oscar Pistorius and American world champion Jerome Singleton.

In arguably the best race in the history of Paralympic sporting competition, Singleton caused a major shock as he beat Pistorius at the Christchurch IPC Athletics World Championships in January by 0.01sec to hand Pistorius his first defeat in disability competition in seven years and avenge his narrow defeat to the same man at the Beijing 2008 Paralympics.

London 2012 look set to see the rivalry resume at the Olympic Stadium in Stratford, with athletics at the Games featuring ten more medal events than in Beijing.

Helen Murphy, the IPC athletics sports manager, said: "The London 2012 Athletics event programme will cover 170 different medal events, which is an increase of 10 on the last Games in Beijing.

"The programme has been developed in consultation with our National Paralympic Committees and has taken into account World Championships participation and performance data, World Ranking lists and depth of sport class.

"The result is a programme we believe is a very exciting one for spectators and athletes alike and provides opportunities for all sport classes to participate in a range of events, including those with high support needs."

As well as Pistorius and Singleton facing off, the men's marathon T54 race is expected to be an epic event with home favourite David Weir of Britain expected to go head-to-head with Australia's Kurt Fearnley, Switzerland's Marcel Hug and Canada's Josh Cassidy.

Weir, Hug and Cassidy will be stepping up their preparations for the event this week as they compete in the London Marathon on Sunday (April 17), while Fearnley has opted to skip the event this year to compete in the Boston Marathon the day after (April 18).

The men's T13 100m could feature the fastest Paralympian on earth in the form of Ireland's Jason Smyth while the women's F42 long jump will probably see new world champion and world record holder Kelly Cartwright of Australia in a mouth-watering contest against former record holder Vanessa Low of Germany.

In London there will be 103 men's medal events whilst women will compete in 67 events.

Athletes have until August 5, 2012 to qualify for the London 2012 Paralympic Games which get underway on August 29 and run until September 9, 2012.

Tickets for the Paralympics will go on sale on September 9, 2011.
