Jeni_Armbruster_rolling_out_ballApril 25 - Jeni Armbruster has become the first Paralympic athlete in history to be inducted into the prestigious Colorado Springs Sports Hall of Fame after being named as part of the 12th Class selected for the honour.

The city is home of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and also houses the Paralympic division of the organisation while the Hall of Fame embraces the city's broad, unique and history-rich sports tradition and triumphs.

Armbruster, who was actually born in Taiwan before moving to the United States at a young age, was a top basketball player before her sight began to deteriorate.

It was then that she took up the sport of goalball where she is now ranked as one of the top players in the world.

The 35-year-old has now competed in five Paralympics and, at Beijing 2008, she was named as the Opening Ceremony flag bearer and goalball team captain.

She then went on to lead the US to Paralympic gold in the sport while she was also part of the team that won a silver medal at the 2010 World Championships.

Before taking up goalball, Armbruster graduated from the University of Northern Colorado in 1997 with degrees in sociology and criminal justice.

She received her master's degree from Sam Houston State in 2000.

She has been inducted into the Colorado Sportswomen Hall of Fame and was named the state's Amateur Athlete of the Year in 1996.

Her career in sports administration has taken her to Portland State University as the school's Coordinator of Adaptive Recreation and Community Outreach.
