London_2012_Paralympics_German_EmbassyMay 16 - The British Embassy in Berlin has hosted an event presenting the Paralympic Post project, which will take place during the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

The Paralympic Post is a newspaper supplement which will be produced by pupils from Germany and Britain during the 2012 Paralympics, which take place from August 29-September 9.

It will appear in major German media publications such as Der Tagesspiegel, Die Zeit and Handelsblatt, as well as in the Saturday edition of The Guardian.

The supplement is expected to reach around five million readers across Britain and Germany.

The event at the Embassy in Berlin brought together over one hundred guests from sport, politics and the media.

Introductory speakers included Parliamentary State Secretary Dr Ralf Brausiepke, from the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, as well as Tagesspiegel editor-in-chief Lorenz Maroldt.

The introductory addresses were followed by a panel discussion with former British Paralympic swimming star and London 2012 Ambassador Marc Woods, German Paralympic wheelchair table tennis player Holger Nikelis and German Paralympic swimmer Christiane Reppe.

"The Paralympic post is a fantastic organisation for engaging young people into the Paralympic Games," said Woods, who won 12 Paralympic medals across five Paralympic Games, four of which were gold.

"I'm excited generally about the Paralympic Games coming to London in 2012.

"The Paralympic Games was born in the UK with Sir Ludwig Guttmann and Stoke Mandeville and it's great for it to be coming back.

"There are thousands of athletes not only in Great Britain but around the world who are really looking forward to coming to London and are training really hard.

"That atmosphere is going to be fantastic, the sports fans in the UK are going to really love it and I hope that as many people as possible get to either compete there, go there as spectators or watch it on TV.

"Or read about it obviously."

The guests also heard from some of the pupils who were involved in the Paralympics Post projects in Beijing 2008 and Vancouver 2010.
