Pistorious_art_of_sportMay 25 - Ten UK artists have been selected for the BT Art of Sport initiative, which has been launched here at the Manchester Regional Arena during the BT Paralympic World Cup.

Working in media such as photography, painting and sculpture, the participants represent some of the UK's most exciting artistic talent and will retell the story of the London 2012 Olympics through their work.

Paralympic sprint star Oscar Pistorius was the subject for the artists ahead his sprint races at the BT Paralympic World Cup on Friday (May 27), and the South Africanhelped out in a number of ways including posing while he was casted by a sculptor for a bronze statue to be made of him.

"The BT Art of Sport programme is a fantastic initiative," Pistorius told insideworldparasport.

"It really shows off the creativity of a number of different artists and it was really interesting being sculpted because it was something that I've never experienced before."

Pistorius, who is also a BT Ambassador, admits he is enjoying his current trip to England, which yesterday saw him visit the Olympic Park in Stratford.

"Seeing the Olympic Park was amazing because it is such an amazing venue and it got me really excited about competing at London 2012," he said.

"I also got to visit a school this morning and speak to the kids there which was great so it has really been a great trip and I'm looking forward to competing on Friday as BT has put on a fantastic event."

The BT Art of Sport initiative forms part of BT's activities for the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad and will produce a body of work that will re-tell the 2012 Olympic story, capturing the dedication and commitment of the Olympic and Paralympic athletes, conveying the drama and passion of these sporting events.

The project will make a valuable and lasting contribution to the 2012 Olympic legacy through a rolling programme of skills workshops, master-classes and public events, and the eventual sale of some of the works will support a range of sporting charities including ParalympicsGB.

BT Art of Sport will draw on the power of art to capture the passion of the Olympic dream, honouring the achievements of the UK's Olympic and Paralympic athletes and enshrining the London 2012 story.

The BT Art of Sport will form part of the wider BT Storytellers initiative.
