IPC_Swimming_European_Championships_Berlin_2011June 27 - The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Swimming European Championship is set for record media coverage when they get underway this weekend in Berlin, it has been predicted.


More than 85 journalists will be in attendance for the event, in which 440 of Europe's top swimmers across 36 countries will be competing from July 3-9.

ARD and ZDF, the German public broadcasters, will be covering the Championships, while the event will also be shown on IPC's YouTube channel www.youtube.com/paralympicsporttv and German website www.spobox.tv.

Channel 4, the UK rights holding broadcaster for London 2012 Paralympic Games, will be in attendance to shoot daily video clips for their website, as well as producing an hour long highlights show.

The BBC will be attending to create content for Radio 5 Live Sports Extra, and Spanish broadcaster TVE will also be in attendance.

Craig Spence, the IPC media and communications senior manager, said: "It is sign of the growth in popularity of Paralympic Sport that the European Championships is set to generate record amounts of media coverage for a regional swimming Championships.

"This event acts as a curtain raiser to the London 2012 Paralympic Games which are just over 400 days away.

"I am confident that all those journalists attending Berlin will witness some truly brilliant stories unfolding in front of their eyes that will translate superbly to their many readers, viewers and listeners across the world."

The opening ceremony will take place on Saturday (July 2) at the Swimming and Diving Centre in Europasportpark before the competition begins the following day.
