Mariana Diaz_de_La_Vega_14-11-11November 14 - Mexico dominated on the first day of the Parapan American Games, taking two gold medals, four silver and one bronze to collect almost half the prizes on offer.


Robbi Weldon and Lyne Bessette claimed the first gold medal of the Games for Canada in the cycling mixed time trial B event, with the United States taking the mixed time trial cycling gold medals for both 10.8-kilometre one-lap races, with Oscar Sanchez and Steven Pearce enjoying glory.

Soelito Gohr of Brazil took gold in the other mixed time trial event, the C1-C5 class over 21.6km.

Swimmers Vianney Trejo, Doramitzi González and Karina Domingo Bello took gold, silver and bronze for the hosts in the 400-metre freestyle, with a further Mexican gold in the pool coming from Mariana Diaz de La Vega (pictured) in the 100m women's breaststroke SB14.

Brazil were the top swimming nation with three golds in total, thanks to Ronaldo Santos claiming victory in the freestyle S7 and Caio Oliveira sweeping home in both the men's 100m backstroke and 4x50m freestyle relay.

Mexico were beaten by Brazil in the opening game of the men's goalball competition, falling 6-3 to Brazil, and Argentina beat El Salvador 20-10, while the US and Canada drew 5-5.

In the women's goalball Mexico thrashed El Salvador 10-0 and Canada defeated Brazil 5-3.

In wheelchair basketball, Canada beat Colombia 57-38 in the men's contest and Mexico won 82-23 against El Salvador.

In the women's competition, Group A saw Argentina defeat El Salvador 41-32, Canada beat Brazil 67-49, and Group B witnessed a thumping for Peru, who lost 61-10 to USA, while Mexico beat Guatemala 71-17.
