Djuraev wins weightlifting gold with Olympic record in 109kg category

Akbar Djuraev of Uzbekistan claimed men's 109-kilogram weightlifting gold with an Olympic record.

The Uzbek athlete lifted 193kg in the snatch and 237kg in the clean and jerk - which beat the previously best at the Games.

His combined total of 430kg was also an Olympic record.

Simon Martirosyan of Armenia also broke a Games record in the snatch, registering 195kg before lifting 228kg in the clean and jerk to finish on 423kg.

The bronze medal went to Arturs Plesnieks who finished on 410kg, edging out Timur Naniev of ROC who lifted a combined total of 409kg.

Djuraev follows in the footsteps of fellow countryman Ruslan Nurudinov who won gold in the category at Rio 2016.
