altMarch 17 - Mick Gault (pictured), England's most successful ever Commonwealth Games competitor, has decided to carry on shooting in the hope of finally making his Olympic debut at London 2012 when he will be 58.

Gault is set to compete in his fifth Commonwealth Games in New Delhi next year but has always failed to make Britain's team for the Olympics.

He has won a record 15 medals in the Commonwealth Games, nine gold, three silver and three bronze.

The Norfolk pistol shooter trains at a home made shooting range at the bottom of the garden and is hoping that it will finally help him achieve his Olympic dream in, what he admitted, is probably his final opportunity.

He said: “I feel that the Commonwealth Games in 2010 and the possibility of my of my first Olympic Games in London in 2012 will be my last.

"You have to call it a day sometime."

The oldest competitor to ever represent Britain in the Olympics was Lorna Johnstone, who was 69 when she represented Britain in dressage at the 1972 Games in Munich, finishing 12th.

The oldest member of the team to travel to Beijing for last year's Olympics was show jumper John Whitaker, who was 53.

But he had to withdraw from the competition because of an injury to his horse.

The oldest competitor in the Olympics was Japan's Hiroshi Hoketsu, also a show jumper, who was 67.

Even more remarkable was that the second eldest was Ian Miller, a 61-year-old Canadian who won a silver medal in the team show jumping event.
