Five individuals have emerged as contenders for the esteemed position of President of the Latvian Olympic Committee (LOK), a development officially confirmed by the committee itself.

Janis Buks, the incumbent leader of LOK, has decided not to seek re-election for the position. Instead, Reirs, a politician from New Unity, has been put forth as the nominee for the presidency.

Reirs received his nomination from the Latvian Luge Sports Federation. Ansis Dalis was put forth by the Latvian Sailing Union, while Viesturs Koziols was nominated by the Latvian Ice Hockey Federation. Arnis Lagzdiņs, nominated by the Latvian Athletics Union, has garnered support from 16 various sports federations.

A grand total of 87 candidates have been put forward for elected positions within the LOK. Out of the 39 Olympic sports federations currently enrolled as members of the LOK, 37 have utilised their privilege to nominate candidates.

Five nominees have been put forward for the position of LOK secretary general, while 27 candidates are vying for spots on the executive committee. Additionally, 53 individuals are in contention for individual membership within LOK, and seven candidates have been nominated for positions within the LOK Audit Committee.

Candidates for the position of LOK Secretary General include individuals such as Raitis Keselis, Nauris Metnieks, Raimonds Lazdiņs, Vladimirs Steinbergs, and Karlis Lejnieks, with the latter currently serving as the secretary general. The LOK General Assembly's review and election session are scheduled to occur at the Radisson Blu Daugava Hotel in Riga on 4 June.

The convening of the 21st General Assembly was prompted by concerns that the incumbent LOK head, Buks, has not adequately advocated for sports funding and the collective interests of Latvia's sports sector. Despite previous indications of willingness to continue his tenure, Buks has now confirmed he will not seek re-election.

The request for the assembly was signed primarily by federations representing smaller numbers of athletes. These federations underscored Buks's lack of intention to seek another term as a focal point in their call for change within LOK leadership.

Historically, the LOK General Assembly, including the election of officials, typically occurs after the Olympics rather than preceding them. The upcoming LOK General Assembly slated for 4 June will determine the fifth president since Latvia regained independence. Vilnis Baltiņs assumed the presidency in 1988, followed by Aldons Vrubļevskis in 2004, Georges Tikmers in 2020, and Buks in 2023.
