The MEFOB Festival (MEFOB FESZT), jointly organised by the Hungarian University Sports Federation and Széchenyi University, took place in Gyor (Hungary) from 30 April to 3 May.

Over the past two years, the festival has grown to become the largest university sports event, and it started its journey as a test event in terms of complexity and size for the upcoming European Universities Games 2024 in Debrecen and Miskolc

From 30 April to 3 May, sport took centre stage at Széchenyi István University in Gyor, which hosted the 2024 MEFOB FESTIVAL, the largest university sports festival, with several national championships and numerous recreational sports events taking place simultaneously to highlight the importance of regular sport and its community-building power for university students.

The MEFOB Festival was launched by the Hungarian University Sports Federation in 2022 to create a multi-sport university sports event where students could not only participate in sports, but also cheer and have fun. The first two editions were hosted by Miskolc (2022) and Debrecen (2023) to better prepare for the 2024 European Universities Games.

This year Gyor has hosted the finals of the Hungarian University Championships in 11 sports (water polo, ergometer, ultimate frisbee, futsal, table tennis, volleyball, rowing, cheerleading, chess, dragon boat and handball). A total of 1448 athletes and 26 universities participated in the MEFOB Festival, with 93 volunteers and 156 organisational assistants. There were 157 medal placings, with 1011 medals awarded.

Peter Juhasz, Secretary General of the Hungarian University Sports Federation, summed up the event, "This year's MEFOB Festival broke several records, thanks to the growing interest in the festival-style sporting event, enriched with various supporting programmes and evening parties. The slogan of the event, SPORT, CHEER, ENJOY! reflects this, and the Széchenyi István University of Gyor, which hosted the event, did an excellent job.

"Not only did students compete for championship titles in more sports than ever before, but there was also the largest number of side events for those who wanted to relax. We can be proud of an excellent event where we did everything to make it unforgettable for the participants, and we invite everyone to join us next year for the MEFOB Festival, which will be hosted by the University of Physical Education," he added.

The cheerleading MEFOB had the largest participation ever, with 13 universities and 247 participants. The University of Pécs had 62 members, followed by the University of Debrecen (36), Eszterházy Károly Catholic University (31), ELTE-SEK (29) and the University of Miskolc (27). The competition for the World Championship qualification took place in two events: Senior Pom Double, won by Katinka Komjáthy - Blanka Székely, and Senior Hip-Hop Double, won by Petra Tóth - Johanna Zab.

At the 10th Jubilee Ultimate Frisbee MEFOB, the host team of Széchenyi István University became the first team from outside the capital to win the competition (11 university teams with more than 150 participants), thus winning the National University Ultimate Frisbee Championship for the first time in the history of the sport.

The University of Pecs dominated table tennis with a record number of 100 athletes from 20 universities competing in eight different events, with the University of Pécs topping the podium seven times. In the rowing, students from the University of Gyor took advantage of their home ground to win a total of 10 gold medals. Szabó Bence, MEFOB FESZT ambassador, multiple European champion, World silver medallist, University World Games and University European champion, student of Széchenyi István University, took part in both the rowing and the ergometer events.

A record of 79 students and teachers from 19 institutions took part in the MEFOB individual chess competition, while eight universities entered 10 teams in the competition. The presence of Hungarian champions, Olympians and 18 title holders raised the level of the competition. Prof. Dr. Sterbenz Tamás, Rector of the University of Physical Education, came second in the teachers' category.

The presence of Olympic champion Dr. Tamas Farago added to the glamour of the water polo tournament. The Budapest University of Technology and Economics won the men's competition and secured an automatic place at this year's European University Games, which will be held in Miskolc. This means that five Hungarian university teams will be represented in Miskolc this summer.

The men's futsal final was a repeat of last year, with the University of Debrecen team again beating Pécs. In the women's category, hosts Széchenyi István University, making their debut in the sport, surprisingly won the championship by a wide margin.

In handball, Lang Zalan, one of the MEFOB FESZT ambassadors and a player for Gyori ETO, gave an outstanding performance for the Széchenyi István University team, which won the final of the national university championship. In the first round of the MEFOB Dragon Boat Championship, Pecsi Sarkanyok started and finished as defending champions in both categories.

At MEFOB FESZT 2024, the host Széchenyi István University topped the medal table with 38 medals, followed by the University of Pécs (29) and the University of Physical Education (16).
