Morseu was found guilty on one count of bodily harm for punching a woman in the head eight times in 2022. Jurors took about six hours to reach their unanimous verdict after Morseu had earlier pleaded not guilty in Cairns District Court. The presiding Judge, Dean Morzone, sentenced Morseu to 18 months in prison.

"It was unprovoked and you were far more powerful in your physicality than she was," the Judge said. "You’ve suffered significant reputational damage with a profound fall from grace as a result of this offending."

The AOC and the IAC were not made aware of the charges until the matter came before the court for trial last Monday.

The AOC’s Indigenous liaison officer, Kyle Vander-Kuyp, says he was ‘blindsided’ to learn his colleague and fellow Olympian had hidden his assault charges for almost two years.

The governing body announced in a press release Monday that they had removed Morseu as deputy chair of its Indigenous Advisory Committee.

"This is a very serious offence – a criminal offence," Paris 2024 chef de mission Anna Meares said on Tuesday in Melbourne, during an announcement of Australia’s Olympic taekwondo team. 

"Abuse against anyone, and abuse against women, is just not tolerated." She said.
