Every year, the Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) holds special events where young people are invited to engage in programmes focused on the Olympic movement.

On Friday (24 May) a delegation of pupils and teachers from Kampala Community International School (KCIS) participated in the latest of these initiatives at the Lugogo-based UOC headquarters, Kawowo Sports reported.

Deborah Isharaza, KCIS’ Director of Education, spoke of the experience which offered students the chance to learn about the Olympic values of fair play, teamwork, friendship, respect and excellence.

"We are humbled to visit the headquarters of the Uganda Olympic Committee. Our learners have learnt a lot and met different people, as the president Dr Donald Rukare and former Olympian Ganzi Mugula" Isharaza said to Kawowo.

Uganda Olympic Committee President Dr. Donald Rukare was delighted to host the young crowd and expressed special gratitude to the young children from KCIS

"I am happy to host young ones from KCIS. This is one of the programs to promote Olympism. This was an engaging affair where the children freely asked and answered questions about the olympic committee. It was inspiring. The children were taught about the values of fair-play, teamwork, friendship, respect and excellence. These values transcend in the sporting life and normal life. We hold these programs yearly as we reach out to the different schools." Rukare expressed.

Olympian Ganzi Mugula, Captain of Team Uganda at the 2012 Olympics in London, was present at the event and encouraged the children to work hard and fulfil their dreams.

"Never give up your dreams in life. Always work hard, do your best and make many friends," Mugula said.

Uganda won a record four medals, all in athletics, at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Team Uganda will hope to better that tally at Paris 2024 with athletes qualifying for the Games in cycling and rowing as well as track and field.
