Olympiakos became the first Greek club to win a European title when they defeated Fiorentina 1-0 after extra time in the final of the Europa Conference League, UEFA's third-tier club competition.

At the Agia Sofia stadium in Athens, the Piraeus giants were playing their first international final against last season's runners-up Fiorentina (who lost 2-1 to English side West Ham in the final) and were looking to end a 64-year drought without a European title.

The Italian side, who had been labelled favourites, took the initiative in the opening minutes and even opened the scoring in the eighth minute through Serbian Nikola Milenkovic, a goal that was later disallowed for offside after a VAR review.

Greek goalkeeper Tzolakis made an excellent save to deny Giacomo Bonaventura soon after, and Nicolas Gonzalez volleyed wide from a good position, as Fiorentina's best chances of the first half went begging.

As the minutes ticked by, Olympiakos began to settle into the game and began to equalise in a game dominated by the Italians.

Goal-scoring opportunities dried up in the second half, although Tzolakis came to Olympiakos's rescue again in the 69th minute when he made a fine sliding save to keep out Christian Kouame's rebounded shot.

With the score locked at 0-0 after 90 minutes, the match went into extra time. In the 116th minute, Spaniard Vicente Iborra played the ball to the left of the Fiorentina area and Argentine Santiago Hezze crossed to the near post for Moroccan Ayoub El Kaabi to head home.

The ball found the back of the net to cement Olympiakos' place in history. The result crowned Olympiakos champions of the Conference League and marked the Greek club's first international title, their previous best being a quarter-final appearance in the Champions League.

Prior to Olympiakos' success, Panathinaikos were the only Greek club to reach a European final, losing to Johan Cruyff's Ajax in the 1971 European Cup final.

"I am very happy. The team has made history. Mendilibar made us a strong team. He told us to play as a family," said midfielder Santiago Hezze.

Spanish coach Jose Luis Mendilibar, 63, became the third coach of Olympiakos this season when he took over in February and has now won two consecutive European trophies after winning the Europa League with Sevilla last year.

"Incredible. For Olympiakos and for me. I am really proud of my boys. We did a great job all year and we deserved it," Jovetic told TNT Sports.

The Montenegro forward added that the celebrations in Olympiakos' home city of Athens tonight "will be incredible".

The Basque-born coach has added a special touch to Olympiakos' quest for the first European title for a Greek club. Since the Spanish coach took over at the Piraeus club, Olympiacos have enjoyed an incredible run to the Conference League title, staging an epic comeback against Ferencvaros in the last 16, beating Fenerbahce on penalties in the quarter-finals and thrashing Aston Villa 6-2 on aggregate in the semi-finals.

José Luis Mendilibar acknowledged that "it has been very hard to achieve these successes" and that what has been achieved over the past two years is "welcome". He also took time out from the celebrations to remember his family: "First of all I think of my family, who have it the worst, who suffer the most and can't do anything about it. Then all the fans who follow us everywhere and give us a lot of strength. Then the club, which will benefit greatly in this centenary year, and finally everyone who has fought day in, day out over the past four months," the 63-year-old coach concluded.
