The EUG, which will take place in Miskolc and Debrecen from 12 to 24 July, will be attended by more than 5,000 participants, including more than 900 coaches, referees and sports professionals, 3,800 athletes and around 1,000 volunteers, the organisers announced at a press conference held at the University of Miskolc. 

They said that this year's EUG is Hungary's biggest sporting event since the 1965 Summer Universiade. The two-week competition will feature 17 sports, with students from four hundred universities in forty countries taking part in the two county seats. 

Balazs Hanko, the State Secretary for Innovation, Higher Education, Vocational Training and Adult Education at the Ministry of Culture and Innovation, announced that sport has become an integral part of every field of study in higher education. He explained that the sports infrastructure at universities is constantly being renewed and that an annual budget of 2.5 billion forints (€1.29 billion) is allocated to university sports activities. 

He added that special funds will be made available to ensure that university athletes who promote Hungarian sport get individual academic plans to support both sporting careers and their education. "Let the Hungarian youth be the most successful," the State Secretary stressed. In addition to knowledge and creativity, a healthy foundation based on sport is essential, he said. 

Lajos Mocsai, president of the Hungarian University and College Sports Association (MEFS), said at the press conference that Hungarian university sports can prove its ability to be among the leaders in Europe in these areas. He added that physical performance has a positive effect on cognitive performance. Regarding the EUG, he commented that the preparations for the event have been going on for three years. 

Balázs Baji, Deputy CEO of the National Sport Agency, mentioned that university sport events also play a community-building role. He emphasised the importance of continuing to participate in sport after graduation. 

The EUG in Miskolc will feature volleyball, chess, judo, kickboxing, karate, basketball, tennis, water polo, beach volleyball and taekwondo. Debrecen will host futsal, football, 3x3 basketball, handball, badminton, table tennis, para-table tennis and beach handball. 

The event will be attended by 700 participants from 22 Hungarian universities, the largest Hungarian delegation in the history of the Games. The mascot is a lynx called Demi, whose name is derived from the first two letters of the names of the two cities
