Record: 26 candidates nominated for election to the International Paralympic Committee Athletes' Council

A record 26 candidates have been nominated for election during the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games to fill six summer representative positions on theInternational Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletes' Council.

Elections for the IPC Athletes' Council will take place from 26 August to 5 September during the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games at the PLY House, near the Main Dining Hall in the Paralympic Village, and at the Athletes' Lounge in the Chateauroux Village for Paralympic Shooting athletes.

The IPC Athletes' Council is a group of elected athlete representatives who act as the voice of the Para athlete community to the IPC. The Chairperson and First Vice-Chairperson of the IPC Athletes' Council are also ex-officio voting members of the IPC Governing Board.

The nomination of candidates depends on the athlete's qualification for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

The six IPC Athletes' Council members elected at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games will be announced at the Closing Ceremony of the Games on 8 September in Paris.

The elected members will join the three winter representatives elected at the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games, as well as appointed member Greg Polychronidis from Greece and the IOC Athletes' Commission President to form the IPC Athletes' Council.

As the current Chair of the IPC Athletes' Council, Dutch wheelchair basketball player Jitske Visser, is not standing for re-election, the IPC Athletes' Council will elect a new Chair at its first meeting in the last quarter of the year.

An IPC Election Commission has been appointed to oversee the election in Paris and to ensure that candidates comply with the IPC Code of Ethics and Campaign Rules.

The Athletes' Council acts as a bridge between athletes and decision-makers and has a significant impact on the growth and development of Paralympic sport and the movement. Accredited athletes are encouraged to vote in the elections to ensure their voice is heard and their sport and region is represented.

All candidates must be competing at the current edition of the Paralympic Games at which the election takes place, or have competed at one of the two previous editions of the Paralympic Games (Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020).

Of the 26 candidates, 14 are male and 12 are female, and 22 are active athletes. Twelve sports and four continents are represented.
