A historic football shirt, the only known surviving example of the shirt worn by the Uruguayan national team when they won gold at the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris, will be auctioned in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, on Wednesday.

The Oriental Republic of Uruguay won two consecutive Olympic Games, in Paris in 1924 and Amsterdam in 1928, both of which the 'Charrúa' nation claimed as FIFA World Cup titles, as world football's governing body had agreed at the 1924 Congress to take responsibility for organising the Olympic Football Tournaments (1924 and 1928) on the condition that the Olympic Football Tournaments were held in accordance with FIFA's regulations, "recognising the tournament as a World Football Championship", according to the official website of the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF).

The shirt worn at what Uruguay consider to be the first World Cup, held in Paris during the eighth Olympic Games of the modern era, will be auctioned in Montevideo, the South American country's capital on the banks of the Rio de la Plata.

The jersey worn by striker Ángel Romano (28 goals in 70 matches in 16 years with the national team), who played in the match in which Uruguay won their first Olympic medal with a 3-0 victory over Switzerland in Colombes, on the outskirts of Paris, will start at $90,000, according to auctioneers Zorrilla.

Sebastián Zorrilla, director of the auction house, told AFP that he had received many enquiries about the piece from collectors and institutions abroad, including FIFA, the organisers of the first Olympic football championship, which preceded the organisation of World Cups for the sport.

"We would like it to remain in the museum of the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF), but we will see what happens," Zorrilla said.

The shirt came to him through a private collector who had bought it from another collector who had bought it from the player's grandson: "We know how it got here, what we don't know is where it will end up.

In addition to the historic jersey, another historic jersey will also be up for auction, albeit with a lower starting price ($50,000). This jersey was worn by Penarol left-back Ernesto Mascheroni during the first FIFA World Cup in Montevideo in 1930, when Uruguay were crowned champions after defeating Argentina.

Both jerseys are made of cotton and have no numbers on the back, as was customary at the time. They are of certified origin. Romano's shirt is marked with his name next to the number 1924, but has no branding. Mascheroni's shirt bears the label of the English company St. Margaret, which supplied European and South American teams at the time.

Among the 180 pieces of sports memorabilia that will go under the hammer is a silver and gold cigarette case that a group of Uruguayans in Paris presented to team captain José Nasazzi during a dinner at the Palais d'Orsay to celebrate their victory at the Games, as well as a gold medal awarded to the champions.

There is also a souvenir cane from Paris 1924, given to Nasazzi by the owner of the house where the Celeste team stayed. "She put the Uruguayan flag on it to cheer the team on," explained Zorrilla, showing an inner mast hidden inside the cane, with remnants of the national flag wrapped in silk.

Among the many documents, photographs, medals and football shirts is a Napoli shirt with the number 10 from the 1987-1988 season, signed by Diego Maradona and authenticated by James Spence Authentication of the United States.

There are items from all the major championships: a shirt from the first World Cup in 1930, pins awarded to the Uruguayan delegation at the 1928 Olympics and a document signed by the entire 1950 World Cup winning team.

The auction will take place in person at the Zorrilla Subastas headquarters in downtown Montevideo on 19 June at 15:00 (18:00 GMT), with the possibility of bidding online via the Invaluable platform from the United States and Drouot from France.
