Rory McIlroy is poised to compete in the Paris Olympics alongside world number one Scottie Scheffler, returning to golf after a hiatus following his dramatic collapse at the US Open.

Qualification concluded after the US Open at Pinehurst, where McIlroy finished as runner-up to Bryson DeChambeau despite losing a two-shot lead with five holes remaining. The final men's Olympic Golf Ranking, released on Tuesday, lists 60 qualifiers from 32 countries.

The top 15 players in the world automatically qualify, with a maximum of four per country. Players outside the top 15 qualify based on their world rankings, limited to two per country not already well-represented. France, as the host country, secured at least one spot, as did each of the five continents in the Olympic movement.

McIlroy, currently ranked second globally and having impressed at the PGA Tour Championships, will represent Ireland at Le Golf National, the venue of past Ryder Cup events, from 1-4 August, alongside Shane Lowry, the former British Open champion.

Scheffler, defending champion Xander Schauffele, Wyndham Clark, and Collin Morikawa are set to represent the USA. Matt Fitzpatrick and Tommy Fleetwood qualified for Britain, while Jon Rahm and David Puig will compete for Spain. Each National Olympic Committee has until June 27 to confirm their athletes with the International Golf Federation.

McIlroy, a four-time Major winner from Northern Ireland, plans to take a break after describing his experience at Pinehurst as one of the toughest days of his career. He intends to return for the Scottish Open on 11 July as preparation for the British Open at Royal Troon.

The 60-player women's field will be finalised after the 24 June qualification deadline. Both the men's and women's events will feature 72-hole individual stroke play.
