Great Britain has announced their triathlon squad for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, marking the first time since Athens 2004 that no Brownlee brother will be included.

Jonny and Alistair Brownlee have been key figures in GB triathlon over the past four Games, securing a total of five medals between them. Despite delaying his retirement to aim for a spot in Paris, 34-year-old Jonny Brownlee has been left out in favor of 26-year-old debutant Sam Dickinson.

British Triathlon's performance director, Mike Cavendish, explained to PA the rationale behind the decision, stating, "Jonny has contributed immensely to this sport, and he remains an exceptional athlete. There's no question that if we had chosen Jonny, he would have performed exceptionally well. However, we faced tough choices, and Sam emerged as the preferred athlete this time."

Cavendish acknowledged Brownlee's disappointment, noting, "As expected from an athlete of his caliber, he is driven to succeed. From his early days in junior racing to winning gold in Tokyo, Jonny has always been determined." Despite his disappointment, Cavendish emphasised that Brownlee understands the challenges in making these decisions.

Sam Dickinson and Tokyo silver medalist Alex Yee will represent Great Britain in the men's triathlon event at the Paris Olympics, aiming to build on the nation's legacy that includes five Olympic medals won by the Brownlee brothers out of a total of eight in the sport.

Leading the women's team is Beth Potter, the current world champion in triathlon. Joining Beth Potter on the women's triathlon team for the Paris Olympics are Tokyo silver medalist Georgia Taylor-Brown and Kate Waugh, who earned her place after an appeal, edging out Sophie Coldwell.

“This was an incredibly hard selection process and one that I’m aware brings delight for some athletes but also disappointment for others,” added Cavendish. “The Olympic Games is the pinnacle of our sport and I know just how much it will mean to the five who will compete in Paris this summer.”

Triathlon events at the Games span three days: the men’s individual race is scheduled for Tuesday, 30 July, followed by the women’s individual race on Wednesday, 31 July, and concluding with the mixed team relay on Monday, 5 August.
