France has already announced its tennis squad for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. There were not many surprises in the names, although it will be notable that Caroline Garcia, the two-time doubles champion, will be competing for medals without her usual partner Kristina Mladenovic on the same court on which she will be playing this summer, centre court at Roland Garros.

The pair won the tournament in 2016 and 2022. They have not played together since last February and French officials have decided to pair Garcia with Diane Parry. The women's team also includes Clara Burel and Varvara Gracheva. Mladenovic was once ranked number one in the world. She has always been an accomplished doubles player with nine Grand Slam titles to her name.

As for Caroline Garcia, she will be returning to doubles at Paris 2024 after a long season in which she concentrated on singles, as she did at the last Roland Garros, where she played only singles and was knocked out in the first round. Garcia's three teammates will be making their Olympic debuts. It is a mix of experience and youth for France.

Edouard Roger-Vasselin and Fabien Reboul will compete in the men's doubles, the French federation announced. Edouard Roger-Vasselin is the recent winner of the Roland Garros mixed doubles tournament. This is one of the most recent references as the Olympic competition will be played on the same surface, clay.

In the men's singles, Gael Monfils will be the leading figure. Monfils has been selected for his fourth Olympic Games. He was ranked sixth in 2008, his best ranking. The 37-year-old knows what it is like to reach the quarter-finals in Beijing in 2008, when Rafa Nadal won the Olympic title, and in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Andy Murray won the latter, beating Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro in the final. The men's team also includes Ugo Humbert, Arthur Fils and Corentin Moutet.

Olympic tennis qualification is challenging as the national federation selects the players and the number of places is limited. For many tennis players, Olympic glory is the ultimate goal. This is the case for Novak Djokovic, who has won only one bronze medal in his career and does not want to retire without a gold medal around his neck. The Serb has not announced his retirement, but this is probably his last chance. 

For many others, the Olympic tournament is often a headache, coming as it does immediately after Wimbledon on grass and Roland Garros on clay. In any case, what is always the same is the adaptability that the tennis players have to have in order to switch from one surface to the other. This sometimes results in the absence of big names in the Olympic line-up.

The current men's Olympic champion is Alexander Zverev, this year's Roland Garros finalist, who lost to Carlos Alcaraz. On the women's side, Belinda Bencic won the gold medal at Tokyo 2020. However, she will not be able to defend her title as she is recovering from her recent maternity leave.
