The World Games Series: Hong Kong to host inaugural edition in 2024

To build excitement for the 12th edition of The World Games (TWG) in 2025, the International World Games Association (IWGA) is launching a new three-sport event. The inaugural edition of the TWG Series will be held in Hong Kong, China, from 11-13 October 2024.

Athletes from around the world will compete in three sports: Cheerleading (ICU) with Pom, Roller (World Skate) with Freestyle Inline, and Wushu (IWUF) with Taolu. This event is an important milestone in the lead up to the 2025 World Games in Chengdu, China, which will take place from 7-17 August.

The Hong Kong series will feature 88 athletes (44 men, 44 women). These athletes will be competing for the chance to qualify for 2025 TWG 2025. All competitions will be held at the GO PARK Sai Sha, Hong Kong.

Qualification spots for The World Games 2025:

-Cheerleading, Pom, Doubles: 1 pair.

-Roller, Inline Freestyle, Slalom Classic: 1 man and 1 woman.

-Roller, Inline Freestyle, Slalom Freestyle: 1 man and 1 woman.

-Wushu, Taolu: 3 men and 3 women.

11 quota places for Chengdu will then be allocated following this first leg, with a second leg tentatively planned for Chengdu in February or March 2025. The event is fully supported by the Samaranch Foundation, for which the IWGA is particularly grateful. Their help not only ensures a successful series, but has also been instrumental in the planning and implementation of the initiative.

The aim of the series is to increase the visibility of the participating sports and their athletes, and to celebrate their achievements in a festival atmosphere that combines sport and culture. The competition schedule and venue preparations will be managed by the IWGA in cooperation with the International Member Federations.

Hong Kong will organise the logistics of the event, including the transport and accommodation of athletes and the provision of competition venues. A unique concept to bring the sport closer to the people will enhance the festival character of the series. All expenses for athletes and officials, including international travel and accommodation, will be covered by the Organising Committee.

IWGA Deputy CEO Guillaume Felli commented, "The launch of the TWG Series is the realisation of the IWGA vision highlighted in our 2021 Strategy Paper. Since presenting the concept to our member federations at our 2022 Annual General Meeting, we have worked tirelessly to achieve this exciting outcome, which has received unanimous support. Hong Kong's valuable experience makes it an ideal partner to launch this new event.

IWGA President José Perurena said, "We are delighted to offer a unique event that brings together athletes from three sports in a fantastic setting. This first stage of the TWG Series will enhance and promote the road to The World Games, which will be held every four years. It is an important milestone in the development of our organisation. I would like to sincerely thank the participating International Federations for their vision and cooperation."

ICU President Jeff Webb stressed, "Not only is the ICU thrilled to be part of The World Games 2025 programme and the opportunities it presents to highlight and showcase the talents of our athletes, but the added opportunity to be invited to participate in the first leg of TWG Series in Hong Kong, China, this October is a significant moment in the history of our sport."

"This newly added world-class international competition will be a life-changing experience for our athletes. The additional quota spot to reach TWG 2025 is more than remarkable. The ICU is grateful to the IWGA President, Mr. Perurena, the IWGA Members and TWG Series Local Organising Committee for this opportunity," he concluded.
