Dressage star Charlotte Dujardin is about to become Britain's most decorated female Olympian, if she wins a seventh medal in Paris. The 39-year-old will be competing in her fourth Olympics in both the individual dressage and team event.

Dujardin, ranked fourth in the International Equestrian Federation's (FEI) world dressage standings, believes she has a "really good chance" of success at the Paris Games and just needs a medal of any colour to take the lead from now-retired cyclist Dame Laura Kenny: with whom she is currently tied on six medals.

She clinched gold in the individual and team events at London 2012 and won team silver and individual gold at Rio 2016, adding two bronze medals to her tally in Tokyo 2020.

"It will be one of the most incredible moments if that does happen," Dujardin told the BBC of her chance at making history.

Dujardin will be riding 11-year-old gelding Imhotep, sired by Everdale, Lottie Fry’s Grand Prix stallion. Known as Pete in the stables, Dujardin said he was very enthusiastic with a lovely nature.

"Pete at nine years old did the world equestrian games, at 10 years old he did the European Championships and at 11 years old he’s doing the Olympics. That just goes to show how clever and talented he is," she told Reuters.

She competed in London and on her mount Valegro, with whom she enjoyed a nearly invincible partnership. In Tokyo, she rode on a Dutch warmblood called Gio.

Dujardin says the chance of becoming Britain’s most decorated female Olympian feels "surreal", but doesn’t put any pressure on herself to make that happen. If a medal does not happen this summer, Dujardin hopes to be at the top of the sport for many years to come, just like fellow Team GB member 57-year-old Carl Hester who will be competing at his seventh Olympics.

"(The record) isn’t really something I’m thinking about going to Paris if I’m honest. I’m going to compete and do my best," Dujardin told Reuters. The dressage competition begins on 20 July at the iconic Chateau de Versailles.
