From being a headache for Goorjian to just a scare. The versatile guard, Doncic’s squire with the Mavericks, Dante Exum, will travel with the Australian squad after dislocating his right index finger a few days ago against France.

Although initially, the injury of the Melbourne-born guard Exum was described as “concerning,” the tables have now turned: the Boomers’ coaching staff has confirmed that the guard is cleared to play in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

This little story, with a happy ending, began just two days ago when Australia stormed Orléans to defeat Wembanyama's France. In a harmless manner, while driving to the basket, Exum hurt his finger.

Aware of the nature of the game, a friendly, and the importance of keeping one of their stars healthy, Goorjian quickly pulled him out and directed him to the locker room. Exum did not return for the rest of the game.

However, the Herald Sun was the first to reveal the presence of the 29-year-old Dallas Mavericks player, “X-rays confirmed there was no fracture, and he is expected to continue his path to compete in the Games.”

Thus, joy seized the Boomers’ squad, which, while still robust, with 70% NBA experience among the 12 men, Exum's absence could have been very critical. In fact, one of his teammates, Jock Landale, confessed upon learning the positive news that “he is definitely a key piece of the puzzle for Australia".

Relief and tranquility have returned to the national team. Goorjian was very “worried” in recent hours. Exum represents a very versatile and humble player model, without the need to hog the spotlight.

In fact, with Doncic’s Mavericks, he is a beloved player and frequently used in Jason Kidd’s rotation. Australia will continue their journey without distractions or setbacks in the Group of Death, fighting tooth and nail against Greece, Canada, and Spain.

Their first match will be on 27 July against Spain, and Exum’s presence seems, in principle, assured.
